~A Note From Kathryn White~
Valentown greetings,
Memorial Day is this weekend and this is when we take time to
respect and remember. We have things in our collection at
Valentown that have a military history but they cannot speak
about those who owned them. Their stories are sometimes fused
into a whole view. But that image is really created like tiny
pixel fragments of individual stories and people. We are all
obliged to listen, record and connect those "dots" not just for
history but to keep us humble and on a good path.
We are "dishing" out some very special deals at Historic
Valentown! So please visit us for our Open House on June 3rd
from 1-4 p.m. and "collect" a collector's plate of your choice!
We are sharing (one to a customer please) a trove of Vintage
plates donated by the Valentine family. The plates range in all
subject matter from wildlife to oriental designs. So come on down!
Small sample of plates on hand
After the Open House they will be available in our gift area
for a donation.)
S.O.S.= Save Our Siding.
Our "Riding for Siding" event on June 24th is our first event to
raise money for repairs to the Valentown Siding. Recently we
came across another historic building in the area that almost
matches our cedar siding. We suddenly realized that the
individuals who built our Hall probably were hired out to build
other structures at the time.? Could there be some material out
there in good condition that would match for our needs?? We have
sample boards to compare.
Kathryn White, President
P.S. Your membership renewals are in the mail.? So watch for
them. And have a very good holiday weekend.

EVENTS

newly acquainted with Historic Valentown, our Peace Garden, our
centuries old oak tree, and our board and great volunteers. And
don't forget to pick up your plate with our compliments!/*
The Annual Meeting* for members of the Victor Historical

Our June 24th "Riding for Siding" fundraiser is inching
closer! We are looking forward to a fun filled day with museum
tours, raffles and a late afternoon BBQ at Milly's Handlebar
Cafe! We've also now got a limited amount of early bird tickets
available to buy online that include raffle tickets. Details and
a full brochure are available in the Events forum: http://historicvalentownmuseum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=56
Special thanks to our partners who worked so hard with us on
this event, please feel free to visit them by clicking on their
logo's below.
And some special wishes and endorsement from front man Frank and
bass man Connor from "our" band *Valentown* in the UK. They are
shown here holding up our 3-fold brochures and commemorative
custom event patches by e-patches.com. We wish they could be here
for the event, and so do they! Well, we do hope to have their
music at the event via CD and we have some of their CD's being
raffled off, too! When you hear them, you're gonna want more!
This was a common salad at my grandparents in the 50's and 60's
and also at home with my parents - picking cucumbers from the
gardens was usual. I carry on the tradition (both growing them
and making this yummy salad). I don't know the origin of the
salad other than it's a German recipe and was probably one
collected by my great grandparents while in Alsace Lorraine,
France during the German occupation.

INGREDIENTS
Amounts of cukes and onions are more or less to your taste and
serving size needs.
Estimate 1/2 cuke per serving
Cucumbers (scored and sliced)
Onions
Salt
Pepper
Milk
Vinegar
Dill Weed (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
Prepare the salad:
1) Slice the ends off the cucumbers, and score them.
2) Slice the scored cucumbers thinly (no more than 1/4" thick)
3) Thinly slice the onions
4) In a glass bowl, mix the sliced cukes and onions with approx.
1/4 tsp salt per cucumber until slices are coated. Let sit a room
temp 2-3 hours.
Prepare the dressing:
Using approx. 1 tbsp. milk to 1/4 tsp. vinegar, mix the milk and
vinegar together, stirring until slightly thickened and
coagulated. Chill 30 -60 minutes.
Finally: Toss dressing with the (now wilted) cucumbers and
onions. Sprinkle dill weed on top (to taste) and serve using a slotted spoon.
Note: You want a dressing that's a little bit sour and with the
consistency of thin cream. Alternative dressings to the vinegar
and milk are:
1) Vinegar and mayo
2) Vinegar and sour cream
Scoring a cucumber: Use a fork to score the length of the
cucumber(s) all around.
Ahhh, with June on the horizon, we all start to think and
see strawberries!
And we all do it... pick or buy more than we need and the rest
start to go mushy. Don't throw out those berries slightly on
the side of rotting! Check out ways to save them for fresh berry
uses down the road in our Recipe Box's Hints and Tips section:

still probably used today." Please remember if you know what it

Our last "What's It" hasn't been figured out yet!
We don't know what this is, so we can't even give out any
hints. While Lyn Bebee is touring on motorcycle down south,
she's hoping somebody... /anybody.../ can figure this out. If
you have a thought or idea about these rods, please share in
our Facebook discussion about them. These seem to be a real stumper.
