~A Note From Kathryn White~
Valentown greetings,
Spring is really getting a late start. We even had to cancel our
volunteer help for the United Way Day of Caring. We really
appreciate what they do for the community and for us, but it is
impossible to work in the building when it is in the 40's. We
all know it is even colder inside until the foundation has warmed
up. Lets hope we do better when the Valentine family comes to
work in the Peace Garden in front of the Hall.
This garden was created in memory of their sister Jane and most
of the flowers in it are from her garden, transplanted with much
care. We will get our knees dirty on Sunday April 22nd. If
you are a gardener and would like to help let us know. You are
welcome to wallow with the rest of us. Just come over.
This is the time that we not only get ready to open but also
focus on membership support for Historic Valentown. Please check
out our new membership levels and easy way to join. We have one
year renewal or better yet auto renewal if you choose. Of course
you can always use our mailing address. We thank you for letting
us know that you care about us through your membership support.
If you have some time this season and would like to help on
Sundays when we are open, you would be very welcomed. We have
lots of fun with visitors. It is a pleasure to see their
surprise if they have never visited. And for those who have not
in some time, we have rearranged some exhibits to better reflect
the original stores and purpose of our building.? Don't forget
our new Susan B. Anthony exhibit that we unveiled last year. We
look forward to a great summer season.

EVENTS
Sunday, June 3rd is our 2018 season grand opening!
This year we are holding an Open House for all, members and
non-members alike! We will be giving free walk through
introductory tours that day, and will have an old fashioned
lemonade stand. There will be an informal introduction to our new
Mason Bee house, too complete with information on how you can
have your very own mason bees if you like. This will be a lovely
opportunity to learn about the new activities that will be going
on at the museum this season. So come on out, it's a great
opportunity to become reacquainted or newly acquainted with
Historic Valentown, our Peace Garden, our centuries old oak tree,
and our board and great volunteers.
The Annual Meeting for members of the Victor Historical
Society/Historic Valentown will be held on Sunday, June 17th at
noon. More details will follow.
June 24th is our "Riding for Siding" fundraiser.
We've worked hard on this event and are looking forward to a fun
filled day with museum tours, raffles and a late afternoon BBQ at
Milly's Handlebar Cafe!
This is a very plain and uncomplicated recipe I found in my moms
recipe box. The original recipe called for "Mrs. Smith's
Mealmaker Pie Shell", but since those are no longer available, I
made my own shell out of a quiche crust recipe I also found in
her recipe box. Convenient!
~~~ submitted by Lynne D Perry
NOTE: This version of the recipe is for a small quiche. For a
full size 9" pie size quiche, double the ingredients for both the
quiche and the crust. Also, these 2 recipes call for 2 different
oven settings. I compromise between 350 and 400 by setting the
oven to 375.
Quiche Lorraine
Ingredients
2 eggs
3/4 cup milk
1/4 tsp. salt
dash cayenne
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1 tbsp. flour
Instructions
Heat oven to 350.
Combine eggs, milk, salt and cayenne, mix well.
Toss the cheese with the flour, and stir into to the egg mixture.
Pour into pie shell and top with bacon curls (recipe here
<http://historicvalentownmuseum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=61/>.
Bake 40-45 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
Here is a Native American dessert for Baked Pumpkin:
Members of the Chippewa tribe near Lake Superior have been
enjoying this savory side dish for generations.
~~~ Submitted by Judy Ingram Orris Schuur
Ingredients:
1 small pumpkin
1/4 cup apple cider
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup melted butter
Instructions:
Put the entire pumpkin in your oven and bake at 350 ?F for about
two hours. Cut the baked pumpkin in half and scoop out the pulp
and seeds from inside, spreading the pulp into a casserole dish.
Mix the remaining ingredients in a bowl and pour over the
pumpkin. Bake for another 35 minutes.
Thanks to Judy Ingram Orris Schuur for sending us this recipe!
Judy was born in Rockford, IL and stayed in the
Rockford/Pecatonica area until 1993, then moved to Prairie Du

to Rockford. She worked mostly in the domestic abuse field as a
victim's advocate/witness.

This months "What is it?"! was submitted to us by Lyn Bebee.
She purchased this at a sale of vintage items, but after getting
it home and inspecting it, she didn't know what it was. So she
reached out to her Facebook friends, and they didn't know either.
So now she's turning to us and our network of "thing identifiers"
to find the answer.
We're hopeful someone will be able to figure this one out for her!
Our last "What's It" is a telegraph machine! (Well, part of
one, anyway.)
We actually weren't sure what it was! But our first guesser,
Dave Plant, had us going for a while wondering if something
was wrong with his keyboard or if there was some kind of a
Facebook glitch. Then it dawned on us, he was giving a hint
in Morse Code! Awesome!
